Hi, I'm Stephen Wenzel.
I am a photographer, storyteller, and aspiring medical professional from Clyde, North Carolina, a small mountain town nestled beside the Blue Ridge Parkway. Growing up surrounded by the forests, rivers, and peaks of Western North Carolina sparked a lifelong appreciation for nature and exploration. At fifteen years old, I picked up a camera and began seeing the world differently. What started as a simple curiosity quickly became a passion that continues to shape how I experience and document the world around me.
Finding My Perspective
Inspired by Joel Sartore's Photo Ark project, I initially focused on photographing wildlife, plants, and landscapes. Photography taught me to slow down and notice details that most people pass by. Every trail, overlook, and backroad became an opportunity to discover something new. Over time, I realized that photography was about more than documenting subjects. It was about telling stories, preserving moments, and helping others see the world through a different perspective.
The Power of Storytelling
My passion for visual storytelling expanded through my involvement with the Folkmoot International Dance Festival in Waynesville, North Carolina. As a volunteer photographer, I documented performers from more than fifteen countries, capturing the energy, emotion, and cultural traditions they brought to the stage. Those experiences taught me that photography has the power to connect people across languages, backgrounds, and experiences. The friendships I built through Folkmoot even extended internationally, leading me to reconnect with performers during a trip to Romania in 2024.
Expanding My Vision
While earning my Bachelor of Science in Biology at UNC Chapel Hill, I continued developing my photography skills through formal coursework and hands-on experience. Under the mentorship of accomplished photographers, including Jeffrey Camarati, Director of Photography for UNC Athletics, I explored new techniques, creative approaches, and professional workflows. These experiences challenged me to think beyond simply taking photographs and instead focus on creating meaningful visual narratives.
Creating Meaningful Images
Throughout college and beyond, I refined my craft through portrait sessions, senior photography, creative concepts, light painting, long exposures, and storytelling projects. I believe the best photographs emerge through collaboration, and I strive to create an experience where every person feels comfortable, confident, and authentically represented. Whether I am photographing a graduate celebrating an achievement, a local business sharing its story, or a landscape at sunrise, my goal remains the same: create images that evoke emotion and leave a lasting impression.
Community & Connection
Community has always been central to my work. As an Eagle Scout with Troop 370, I have shared my knowledge by teaching photography to younger scouts and mentoring others interested in the craft. I have also served as lead photographer and videographer for the Tuscola High School Marching Band, documenting performances and milestones for students and families throughout the community. These experiences reinforced my belief that photography is not just about creating images but about building relationships and preserving memories that matter.
Beyond Photography
Today, my work spans nature photography, wildlife, travel, portraits, creative storytelling, and commercial projects. Through my photography and videography, I aim to inspire curiosity, celebrate meaningful moments, and encourage people to see beauty in places both familiar and unexpected. I am constantly pursuing new experiences, exploring new locations, and pushing myself creatively to produce work that is both impactful and authentic.
Outside of photography, I am pursuing a Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences as I continue my journey toward a career in medicine. While these two paths may seem different, they are connected by a shared purpose: understanding people, observing the world carefully, and making a positive impact on the communities around me.
My philosophy is simple:
Community. Collaboration. Creativity.
Whether you are looking for professional portraits, creative storytelling, commercial imagery, or simply want to follow along on my adventures, I am grateful you are here. I invite you to explore my work and join me in discovering the stories that surround us every day.
